Returning to Canada on Civic Holiday? What to know before crossing the border
August 5, 2024 at 4:19 AM
As the Civic Holiday long weekend concludes today, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is offering tips for travellers crossing the Peace Bridge and other ports of entry.
The CBSA is emphasizing preparedness to ensure a smooth return. According to a news release, the “Monday of holiday long weekends tend to be the busiest.”
To manage this peak travel time efficiently, the agency is providing several recommendations.
Delays are expected, so early morning crossings can help avoid longer waits. Different ports of entry may have shorter wait times, so consider alternate routes. Ensure all necessary travel documents are ready to expedite processing.
Anything being brought back into Canada must be declared, including items in vehicles and boats. There are restrictions on certain items such as food, plants, animal products, poultry, fireworks, medication, and firewood.
If you are travelling with a child who is not your own or if you do not have full legal custody, have a consent letter from the parent or legal guardian. Pets must meet entry requirements into Canada.
For those flying, use advance declaration to make customs and immigration declarations up to 72 hours before arrival. If entering by boat, report to the CBSA immediately upon entering Canadian waters.
Travellers are reminded not to bring firearms, restricted weapons, narcotics, or cannabis across the border.
