Minor injuries suffered in two-vehicle collision at Garrison and Thompson roads

Minor injuries were suffered in a two-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon.

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), the Fort Erie Fire Department (FEFD), and Niagara Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were at the intersection of Garrison and Thompson roads shortly after 3 p.m.

Two vehicles, one of them with New York license plates, suffered extensive damage and one of them appeared to have collided with a light post before coming to a rest in the ramp accessed by motorists turning west onto Garrison Road from Thompson Road.

Constable Phil Gavin, media relations officer for the NRP, did not have information at 5:30 p.m. on whether charges had been laid, as the incident report had not been completed at that time.

Roger Haist, chief training officer for FEFD, said it appeared the collision occurred as a result of one vehicle turning left from Garrison Road onto Thompson Road.

“The left-turning vehicle failed to assure that all the straight-through traffic had stopped,” Haist told Fort Erie Radio, adding that the light was yellow at the time and that the driver of each vehicle “assumed the other person was going to stop.”

Each vehicle was occupied only by its driver, both of them refusing transport to hospital by EMS paramedics, said Haist, noting firefighters were on scene for about an hour and a half.

Gavin said both vehicles were towed from the scene.
