Niagara police offer free Faraday bags to combat auto theft

To combat the rising rates of auto theft, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) is offering free Faraday bags to Fort Erie residents.

Faraday bags are small pouches designed to block the signal from a car key fob, preventing thieves from capturing it to steal vehicles. Niagara police say auto thefts have surged in recent years, driven in part by organized crime.

To obtain a Faraday bag, Fort Erie residents can visit the 5 District front desk (650 Gilmore Rd.) during regular business hours. Police will also provide additional information on auto theft prevention, if requested.

NRPS is part of a provincial initiative to combat auto theft, working with other Ontario police services and international partners.

According to police, 66 vehicles are stolen across the Niagara region every month.

The increase in auto thefts has been attributed to several factors, including a shortage of vehicle parts caused by supply chain disruptions during the pandemic.
