Police investigate historical sexual assault allegations at Fort Erie shelter

Niagara Regional Police say they are investigating allegations of sexual assault that are reported to have occurred at a Fort Erie shelter in early 2024, and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

According to a news release issued Tuesday by the Niagara Regional Police Service, detectives with the force’s Sexual Assault Unit are investigating allegations dating from February to April 2024.

Police say a 57-year-old Niagara Falls man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is facing multiple criminal charges, including sexual assault, personating a peace officer and intimidation.

The individual remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court in St. Catharines.

Fort Erie Radio does not publish the names of accused persons until they have been convicted.

Police said in the release that the individual worked in various roles with community agencies supporting newcomers and other vulnerable people across Niagara beginning in 2023.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact police.

Niagara Regional Police are asking witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact the Sexual Assault Unit through the police non-emergency line at (905) 688-4111.
