Fort Erie joins Niagara’s shop local campaign for tariff-hit businesses

Fort Erie has joined Niagara Region’s new Niagara Thrives campaign to steer holiday shoppers toward local businesses, 20 months after U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods took effect.
The campaign asks Fort Erie residents to buy locally made products and services this holiday season and to post positive online reviews of local shops.
Niagara Region launched it October 21 in response to U.S. tariffs, including 50 per cent duties that took effect August 22 and led Fort Erie’s Peninsula Plastics to drop plans for a new weekend shift.
The Town of Fort Erie’s economic development team will share Niagara Thrives with local business networks and business improvement areas, “encouraging residents to shop local and businesses to access available supports through Niagara Region,” said town communications manager Kevin Beauchamp.
Fort Erie Radio asked the town if it planned any initiatives or partnerships of its own, and the town’s reply named none.
“Niagara Thrives is an opportunity for Fort Erie residents to show support for the local businesses that help define our community,” said Beauchamp.
“As businesses navigate changing trade and tariff conditions, the choices residents make can have a meaningful local impact,” said Niagara Region economic development director George Spezza in the news release.
Residents can find local shops through the Fort Erie’s online business directory.
