SNL jab puts Garrison Road Pizza Hut at centre of hot dog crust backlash

A joke on Saturday Night Live has put a single Canadian Pizza Hut location in the spotlight, with a three-day discount drawing attention from both sides of the border.

Pizza Hut Canada posted an “apology” to Americans after a Weekend Update SNL segment mocked its hot dog stuffed crust pizza, then tied a 50 per cent discount to the store on Garrison Road from April 17 to 19.

The segment featured Colin Jost taking aim at the Canadian-only item, saying, “Hey Canada, our culture is not your costume.”

The company responded on social media with a message acknowledging American reactions and offering what it described as condolences.

“We read your tweets. Saw your DMs. Understand your confusion. We know you’re still coming to terms with the painful understanding that hot dog stuffed crust pizza only lives north of the border,” wrote Pizza Hut on Instagram.

Reaction online has centred on the Fort Erie location as much as the product itself.

One user wrote, “‘In store only, only at Fort Erie location’ is what sent me.”

Another wrote, “Dear Pizza Hut Canada–specifically Garrison Road, Fort Erie. Please stop wrapping our pizza crust around your wiener. It’s just weird.”

Other comments describe plans to cross the border to try the pizza, while some criticize the idea of combining hot dogs with pizza crust.

The hot dog stuffed crust pizza launched in Canada on March 30. The crust contains full hot dogs baked into the edge and comes with ketchup and mustard for dipping.

Reviews online show a split response.
