Four new EV charging stations open in Fort Erie

Fort Erie opened four new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations Tuesday, doubling public charging capacity to eight ports and adding access in Crystal Beach, Ridgeway, Bridgeburg and at town hall.

The town said the chargers were installed through the Charged for Change program, funded by Aviva and Earth Day Canada, and form part of Fort Erie’s climate change action plan. The new stations give residents and visitors more places to charge vehicles now and expand municipal infrastructure as electric vehicle ownership grows.

The four double-headed Level 2 stations are at:

  • town hall, 1 Municipal Centre Drive,
  • the Crystal Beach parking lot, 4168 Erie Road,
  • Fort Erie Public Library, 89 Ridge Road South,
  • and the Jarvis Street public lot at 97 Jarvis Street.

Council had announced last year that Fort Erie secured $116,000 in grant funding for the project. At that time, town staff said the locations were chosen to spread charging access across high-traffic public areas.

Mayor Wayne Redekop said the additions support the town’s strategic plan and environmental goals.

“These new EV charging stations are a practical step forward in delivering on council’s strategic plan,” Redekop said in a media release. “They expand access to clean transportation.”

Chief Administrative Officer Chris McQueen said the chargers also target tourism and day-trip traffic.

“Those new chargers support residents who are making the switch to electric vehicles, but also position our community as a welcoming destination for visitors and travellers to Fort Erie,” he said.

The province previously announced that Fort Erie would recieve seven charging stations through Ontario’s ChargeON program in November 2024.
