The provincial government is installing 139 new electric vehicle charging stations in Niagara, and seven of them are set to be placed in Fort Erie.
That’s according to a news release from the province posted on the website of Niagara-West MPP Sam Oosterhoff.
“For electric vehicle drivers finding a charging station that is close by and available can mean the difference between a quick stop and a time-consuming detour that takes time away from work, school or family,” said Oosterhoff, one of four MPPs in Niagara.
It is currently unknown to Fort Erie Radio where the seven charging stations will be going in town.
These new chargers, part of the government’s $63-million Electric Vehicle ChargeON Program Community Sites Stream, will be located in the following communities:
- 85 new chargers in Niagara Falls;
- 35 new chargers in St. Catharines;
- Seven new chargers in Port Colborne;
- Seven new chargers in Fort Erie;
- Four new chargers in Welland;
- Four new chargers in Beamsville.
“With more than 201,000 electric vehicles on the road in Ontario, we are putting shovels in the ground to build more charging stations and make life easier for drivers,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification, in the recent news release.
“That includes a focus on smaller and underserved communities across our province where we are providing more certainty for parents and workers during their commutes.”
Each new electric vehicle charging site will include Level 2 charging stations, Level 3 charging stations, or a combination of the two.
The government has also launched reduced overnight electricity pricing and is exploring options for a discount electric vehicle electricity rate to further support electric vehicle adoption and reduce emissions, the release said.
