Meteors open playoffs after 39-win season, Sam Tonelli leads roster

The Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) playoffs begin Saturday night at the Fort Erie Leisureplex as the Fort Erie Meteors face the Brantford Titans, entering the quarterfinal series after an historic 39-win regular season and a league scoring title for forward Sam Tonelli.

The Meteors finished one of the strongest seasons in franchise history and now begin a compressed playoff schedule of up to seven games in 10 days. Coaches credit a veteran core and a team-led standard of accountability for the club’s results as it begins a new postseason run.

“The playoffs are a different animal, so we just kind of treat it as a new season,” Anthony Passero, assistant coach of the Meteors, told Fort Erie Radio.

Fort Erie defeated Brantford in all four regular-season meetings, but the coaching staff does not treat those results as predictive. The postseason schedule runs Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday if the series goes the full seven games.

The pace places a physical demand on players across the roster, especially after a 50-game regular season. The Meteors also finished with the league’s lowest goals-against average for the second consecutive season.

“It’s kind of survival of the fittest. So I think our guys are ready and the schedule won’t be a problem at all. No excuse, that’s for sure,” said Passero.

Individual achievements defined the year as well. Tonelli, a 20-year-old centre from Port Colborne, finished with 88 points in 50 games to lead the entire league across both conferences.

The scoring race came down to the final week of the season with challengers from Elmira and Cambridge before Tonelli secured the title. The achievement earned him the Terry Crisp Trophy as the GOHL regular-season scoring champion and the Pat Murphy Memorial Trophy as Eastern Conference scoring leader.

“Nobody deserves it more than him. He’s a great guy,” said Passero.

Tonelli has committed to Wilfrid Laurier University, where he will continue his hockey career next season while studying and playing for the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Passero described Tonelli as respected within the dressing room and outside the rink, crediting his work ethic and character for the season’s results.

“If you met Sam off the ice, when people ask me about him, he’s just everything you want in a kid. If you were to have a son, he’s exactly what you would dream of having,” said Passero.

The roster’s veteran leadership has also shaped the team’s culture throughout the season.

Passero identified team captain Rylan Masterson, a defenceman from Niagara Falls, and Tonelli as two players who set the tone inside the room. Their approach influences younger players throughout the lineup and reduces the need for constant direction from coaches.

“I can really say that those two guys even make our coaching staff better,” said Passero.

Community support at the Fort Erie Leisureplex has remained a constant factor for the team during the year. The opening playoff game Saturday begins the first chance for local fans to see the team’s postseason run.

“These guys love when we pack the barn, and I know the town loves playoff hockey,” said Passero.

Fort Erie Radio will be airing all home and away games for round one of the Sutherland Cup playoffs.
