FEIA player named MVP of prestigious Grind Session all-star game

Even though no championship titles were taken home by Fort Erie International Academy (FEIA)’s basketball teams at the most prestigious event in North American high school basketball, there were still a couple of wins.

The Grind Session was held in Kansas City and concluded on the weekend.

The girls team lost in the semifinals to Royal Crown from Toronto, and the boys team lost in the finals to Prolific Prep Academy from California.

“We’re the first Canadian team to make it that far,” said boys’ coach Charles Hantoumakos in an interview with Fort Erie Radio on Tuesday.

Two FEIA players from the women’s team, Maya Foz and Nyadieng Yiech, played in the all-star game.

Foz was named Most Valuable Player.

Hantoumakos said this is an “amazing accomplishment” for Foz and that she deserves all the success she’s having.

“We couldn’t be more proud of them for what they did,” he said.

“They’ve become ambassadors of the girls team at Fort Erie,” he added about both young all-stars.

Both signed NCAA contracts recently.

He said Foz being named MVP is a “testament to her hard work” since day one, and that the Grind Session is considered the “highest level” of high school basketball on the continent.

Both teams will compete in the national championships in Toronto later this month, which the boys’ Red Falcons team won last year.

FEIA has produced multiple players to make it to division one NCAA schools, as well as to the NBA, such as Leonard Miller, who was drafted in 2023 by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
