Niagara Parkway closes as lake surge, high winds threaten flooding

A section of the Niagara Parkway in Fort Erie is closed this afternoon as rising water levels and gale-force winds create hazardous shoreline conditions.

According to a public notice received by Fort Erie Radio on Wednesday, Niagara Parks closed the stretch of the parkway between Queen Street and Central Avenue beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The closure applied to both vehicles and pedestrians and will remain in place until conditions improve.

The precaution follows a gale warning issued for eastern Lake Erie, with Environment Canada forecasting waves up to six metres and wind gusts approaching 74 km/h by this evening.

As Fort Erie Radio reported earlier in the day, forecasters expect a rare seiche to develop, rapidly shifting water levels from the western to the eastern end of the lake.

Niagara Parks said the temporary road closure is being implemented due to “anticipated flooding” linked to these conditions.

The parkway will reopen once officials determine the area is safe.

Residents can find updates and all current Niagara Parks public notices on the agency’s website.
