Amber Alert suspect dead following police shooting in Niagara Falls

The man at the centre of Tuesday’s Amber Alert and homicide investigation in Peel Region has been confirmed dead following an overnight police shooting in Niagara Falls.

Niagara Regional Police said 38-year-old Anthony Deschepper was pronounced dead at the scene after an “interaction with officers” early Wednesday morning near Thorold Stone Road and Montrose Road.

According to a release from the Niagara Regional Police Service, members of the Emergency Task Unit located a vehicle connected to Deschepper around 2:30 a.m. at a gas station in the area.

Local officers had been assisting Peel Regional Police in the search for the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Brampton earlier in the day.

Police said a shelter-in-place order issued Tuesday evening for parts of Crystal Beach was lifted after investigators determined Deschepper had left the area. The order followed reports that evidence related to the Peel investigation had been found near Prospect Point and Ridgeway Road.

No officers were injured during the Niagara Falls incident. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is now investigating, as is standard whenever police are involved in a fatal shooting.

The unfolding case began Tuesday afternoon when Peel police issued an Amber Alert for a one-year-old girl allegedly abducted following a deadly shooting outside a Brampton strip mall. The child was later found safe, but police said the suspect fled in a black 2024 Nissan Kicks with Quebec licence plate FRV 4520.

Niagara police are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the latest incident to contact the SIU at (800) 787-8529 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Niagara.
