Wednesday police drill to rattle Stevensville with blasts, gunfire

Anyone near Burger Road in Stevensville who hears explosions and gunfire Wednesday should hold the 911 call, because the noise likely belongs to a Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) training exercise.

The NRPS will run the exercise June 10 with its Explosive Disposal Unit and Emergency Task Unit near Burger and College roads in Stevensville. Residents will hear real explosions and simulated gunshots through the area.

Police want the public and the media to keep clear of the training grounds for everyone’s safety.

The Explosive Disposal Unit defuses bombs and military ordnance for the force. Its training accounts for the explosions residents will hear.

The Emergency Task Unit is the force’s tactical team for the most dangerous calls. Its drills account for the simulated gunshots, and it ran a similar exercise in Stevensville in May 2024 near West Main Street and Old Mill Road.

Signs will mark the training area to warn anyone who wanders close.

The notice covers Wednesday only, and police gave no start or end time for the drills.
