Vegetation trimming by Niagara Parks to briefly close local trail

A short trail closure next to the Niagara Parks Marina at Miller’s Creek will affect local users as Niagara Parks carries out vegetation trimming along the Niagara River shoreline.
Niagara Parks began the work Monday and is expected to take three to four weeks before wrapping up in December.
Niagara Parks’ Manager of Forestry and Environmental Sustainability Corey Burant told Fort Erie Radio the trimming is part of an ongoing effort “to maintain trail safety and accessibility, reduce the spread of invasive species and promote healthy vegetation growth, while preserving scenic views of the Niagara River.”
The project started on the Niagara Parkway across from Service Road 1 and is moving north through areas with the “highest concentration of invasive species,” according to Burant, such as the spotted lanternfly, first sighted in Fort Erie in 2023.
Crews will trim between both ends of Cairns Crescent across from the Niagara Parks Marina before continuing north along the shoreline.
“The only anticipated temporary closure in Fort Erie is the section of trail across from the marina, which is expected to last no more than one day,” said Burant.
Trimming will also occur on select parts of the recreation trail near Queenston Heights and other spots that need clearance for people walking or cycling.
Much of the vegetation trimming is taking place near Niagara-on-the-Lake.
