Town to replace trees cut down in Ridgeway last month

The Town of Fort Erie is making good on a promise to replace trees that were suddenly removed from a popular gathering spot last month.

About a dozen trees were cut down at Ridgeway Village Square, a town-owned site in downtown Ridgeway with a pavilion and splash pad.

Following their removal, local residents and business owners voiced criticism about the incident, pointing to the maturity of the trees and the shade they provided.

Ward 4 Councillor Joan Christensen told Fort Erie Radio at the time that she was hearing from people in the area concerned about the “loss and devastation.”

The town issued a statement following Fort Erie Radio reporting on the matter, and said the removal of the trees was a result of overcrowding and the trees’ health being in jeopardy.

But on Tuesday, the town said on its social media channels that “up to 12” trees will be planted at the site by the end of the month.

“We plan to plant tulip and serviceberry trees in a new layout that will ensure the trees have enough space, light, and nutrients to thrive, keeping Fort Erie beautiful,” said the town.
