Nineteen Fort Erie locations with StopGap ramps recognized by town

The Town of Fort Erie recognized 19 local businesses and organizations this week that received temporary accessibility ramps over the past two years.

The initiative, led by the town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), is part of Fort Erie’s ongoing partnership with the StopGap Foundation. It’s intended to improve access for people with disabilities, parents with strollers, and individuals using mobility aids.

The 10 newest installations, which took place last year, followed a 2023 pilot project that saw nine local businesses receive ramps to overcome single-step barriers.

National AccessAbility Week, which runs May 25 to 31 this year, was an opportune time for town council and the AAC to recognize those in the community who embody the spirit of this year’s theme of accessibility and inclusion for all.

“The Fort Erie AAC is thrilled to recognize the 19 businesses and organizations that have taken meaningful steps to make their buildings more accessible to people with disabilities,” said AAC chair Lori Brant in a news release issued Monday.

“These improvements offer both financial and social returns, positively impacting not only individuals with disabilities but also their families, friends, and travel companions,” she added.

The 10 participants in last year’s round of new accessibility ramps included the Manic Maker, St. John’s Stevensville United Church, Blue Goose Farm, Bridgewater Country Club, Beach House Restaurant, South Niagara Life Ministries, Maplewood Gelato and Sweets, Gibson and Reitboeck LLP, Crystal Ball Cafe and the Crystal Beach Museum.

Each participating location displays a window poster advising customers that a ramp is available on request.

StopGap ramp applications remain open for future rounds, with new inquiries being placed on a wait list.

According to their official website, the StopGap Foundation works to “raise awareness about barriers in our built environment and engage communities to work towards removing these barriers.”
