Salvation Army getting Fort Erie students ready for school year

Summer has just begun but it’s never too early to start thinking about the upcoming school year.

The Salvation Army’s annual back-to-school campaign is underway in Fort Erie, seeking donations to ease the financial stress that arrives for families when classes resume in September.

Donations of backpacks, pencils and pens, crayons, pencil crayons, markers, notebooks, and school-safe snacks are being accepted until the first week of August.

The campaign will benefit about 125 kids, said community project co-ordinator Natalie Beres.

She also pointed out that the campaign partners with Canadian Tire and Sport Chek to provide running shoes for each child.

Students from kindergarten to high school will be on the receiving end, but Beres noted that “a lot of young boys that age have giant feet,” and that there may not be running shoes for the older kids who wear a larger size.

Along with shoes, each child will receive a backpack full of school supplies, and a one-week supply of snacks.

There will also be a “miscellaneous table” that kids can browse when they come in to pick up their goods.

The program is open to any school-aged child who lives in Greater Fort Erie and appointments can be booked over the phone.

The Salvation Army on Gilmore Road can also be contacted directly by people who wish to donate.

Items will be handed out the third week of August.

“We just want to get help out to the people who need it,” Beres said.
