Legion launches biweekly buffet to connect community with veterans

Legion Branch 230 in Ridgeway has started a new all-you-can-eat Sunday breakfast buffet every other week, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the next service set for January 18.

The brunch is provided by Grumps Catering, with food prepared on-site, drinks available for purchase and proceeds supporting the Legion’s ongoing mission to serve veterans and the community.
“The older generations are passing, and the younger generations have no idea what our veterans have done for our country,” Jennifer Taylor, owner of Grumps Catering and Legion volunteer, told Fort Erie Radio. “This brings things back into perspective of what the Legion is for.”
The buffet is priced at $18 per person, which Taylor described as a way to keep the Legion accessible at a time when eating out is increasingly costly.
Beyond breakfast, the Legion has expanded its food schedule. Restaurant-style dinners run on Sundays from 4 to 8 p.m., with table service and a full menu.

Wednesdays include happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. and 75-cent wings from 1 to 7 p.m. and are eat-in only.
Taylor said the events are meant to spark curiosity and conversation once people step inside.
“People can come in and ask, ‘What is this?’ They look at the calendars and the photos of previous veterans. They ask where the money goes, and we tell them about the Remembrance Day Fund, the Poppy Fund, and how we help veterans with whatever they need assistance with.”
She said the Legion has faced ongoing staffing and volunteer shortages since the pandemic, which makes consistent programming difficult.
Additional community meals are planned, including a free soup-and-sandwich luncheon on January 24 from noon to 2 p.m., which Taylor said will run monthly.
The Ridgeway Legion is also planning free family activities later in the summer, with details to be shared through its Facebook page.
