Police say Tuesday weapons threat near Peace Bridge ‘unfounded’

Niagara Parks Police say a reported weapons threat near the Peace Bridge was “unfounded,” but caused Tuesday morning road closures in areas near Mather Arch.

Paul Forcier, chief of Niagara Parks Police Service, told Fort Erie Radio police checked the area out of caution, including spaces near the Peace Bridge and other Niagara Parks properties.

The Canada Border Services Agency confirmed the Peace Bridge remained operational and staffed, and that it had no public safety concerns.

“We had our dog out and it did nothing really to report,” said Forcier. “Everything was unfounded, there was nothing afoot and no threat to the public.”

Police temporarily closed roads Mather Crescent, Lakeshore Road and Central Avenue during the response at roughly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

“We cleared the area out of an overabundant precaution,” said Forcier.

The closures were lifted in less than an hour, according to Forcier.
