Playground next to Sugarbowl splash pad nearing completion

An addition to the new splash pad at Sugarbowl Park is nearing completion.

Expected to be ready later this fall is a playground, one with a rubberized surface and all the other features families can expect.

The splash pad, which opened in June, serves as a replacement for the Kinsmen Pool, an outdoor swimming facility that served the community for decades.

The splash pad has been a popular spot since it opened.

“We don’t have exact numbers but since the grand opening of the splash pad, the park has been extremely well used by residents and we could not be any more pleased,” said Edward Terry, manager of policy and community planning for the Town of Fort Erie.

The playground and splash pad were considered by council at the same time, but the work has been carried out in phases “to complete the work in manageable sizes and provide an opportunity to deliver parts of the project to residents earlier,” said Terry.

A pavilion is also planned to be built at the site.

Altogether, the work is part of a $2.36-million project. The splash pad came with a price tag of $1.925 million, the playground was built for $250,000, and the pavilion will come with a cost of $130,000, said project manager Elizabeth Latif.

The Fort Erie Lions Club also donated $55,000 for improvements to the park.

UPDATE | OCTOBER 11, 2024 @ 5:57 P.M.: Local residents have confirmed to Fort Erie Radio that the playground was in use this week.
