Niagara River trail repairs and restoration begin Monday

Sections of the Niagara River Recreation Trail in Fort Erie will close in stages starting Monday as crews restore areas that have sustained damage from decades of weathering.

Work is expected to wrap up by September 26.

The Niagara Parks Commission said in a Thursday news release that repairs will focus on the stretch of trail between Old Fort Erie and Mather Arch.

Crews will realign the trail to improve its resilience against future storms.

The trail will stay as open as possible during construction, with closures limited to small sections at a time.

“The main goal is to try and do it without much disruption to the public,” said Katy Wassenaar, senior manager of public affairs at Niagara Parks.

“It’s a very popular trail…so it was really important to the project to limit closures as much as possible,” she told Fort Erie Radio.

The project runs alongside ongoing shoreline protection work along the Niagara River breakwall near Mather Arch. That area remains closed with construction fencing in place and is expected to stay off limits until the end of October.

Motorists may encounter minor delays on the Niagara Parkway from trucks and heavy equipment entering the work zone.

Increased noise and dust are also to be expected during construction.
