Niagara Railway Museum hosting 6th annual RailDays event in September

If you love trains–whether steam, diesel or electric locomotives–there is one place you will want to be in September.

The Niagara Railway Museum (21 Warren Street) will be hosting their sixth annual RailDays event, rain or shine, on September 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ken Jones, president of the Niagara Railway Museum (NRM), said there will be various pieces of the museum’s collection outside on display, and also some additional displays inside.

“One of our members is bringing his Lego trains out to set up and run. Lego is always a hit with kids and many adults,” said Jones.

“In the office area we will have some railway and local history displays, including the Ontario Northland Railway, and the Amusement Park Historical Association of Niagara, and a couple vendors selling model trains and railway memorabilia.”

The NRM is a non-profit charitable organization which relies on and is operated by donations. It is also one of only two railway sites in Ontario with four or more steam locomotives.

“We have four, with the oldest being 1920, and newest being 1958,” said Jones. “Visitors can see the differences between steam, diesel and electric locomotives.”

Events like RailDays are a major part of NRM’s fundraising efforts.

“While we will be charging a set admission fee (of $5), there are donation boxes in other locations in the shop with funds going to a specific project.”

One such project is the cosmetic restoration of their 1920 steam locomotive.

“We are hoping to get right into that over the winter,” said Jones.

“We don’t have a lot of extra funds to do huge things, but if we were able to get some sponsors to help offset some costs, I have plans for things I’d like to bring in for the weekend.”

Jones added that the museum is always looking for new members and volunteers.

“We have many tasks and projects on the go. Not every task requires you to get dirty. But if you don’t mind that side of it, then we have lots of projects to get your hands on.”

Jones added that “experience isn’t necessary, but it does help.”
