New Fort Erie water tank expected to rise over Pettit Road in July

A new elevated water tank is expected to be hoisted into place in Fort Erie next month as Niagara Region works to replace aging water storage infrastructure in town.

According to Niagara Region, the new 56.7-metre tank is being built on Pettit Road and is expected to be hoisted in early July.

The region says the work is expected to begin early in the morning and take about four hours, weather permitting.

No public road closures or detours are expected because the hoisting will take place on Niagara Region property.

The new tank will replace existing water storage facilities and add capacity for homes, businesses and fire protection systems in Fort Erie.

Elevated water tanks store treated drinking water and use gravity to provide water pressure.

The region says the new tank weighs about 9,250 tonnes and is roughly the height of a typical 15- to 18-storey building.

According to Niagara Region’s project page, the site at 1886 Pettit Road was selected through a Class Environmental Assessment for a new Fort Erie elevated tank and related watermain upgrades.

The assessment reviewed the existing water system and evaluated potential sites in Fort Erie.

The new tank is part of recommended improvements from its Water and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan.

The region says the new elevated tank will consolidate and replace Fort Erie’s existing water storage systems, which are nearing the end of their service life.

The existing Central Avenue elevated tank and Stevensville reservoir are expected to be decommissioned after the new Pettit Road tank is commissioned and fully operational.

Niagara Region says the new tank is expected to be in operation by July 2027.

Once fully removed, the old tank is expected to be recycled.

Niagara Region operates six water treatment plants and 38 reservoirs or elevated tanks across 11 municipalities.
