Meteors advance to second round of playoffs with 5-0 win Saturday

The Fort Erie Meteors got the job done on the road Saturday.

In game six of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey league eastern conference quarterfinals, the Meteors won the first-round series 4-2 against the Cambridge Redhawks.

And it was a 5-0 blowout to take the contest.

Tate Donald and Colton Radford scored in the first period, and Aiden Zimmerman scored in the second.

Finding the back of the net in the third period were Derek Smyth, and Radford with his second of the game.

Goaltender John Lloyd stopped all of the 19 shots he faced behind a Meteors team who had 28 shots on Cambridge’s net.

The Meteors will face the Caledonia Corvairs in the next round, assistant general manager Mike Fowler told Fort Erie Radio late Sunday.

This will be a rematch of last year’s championship finals when the Meteors beat Caledonia in seven games to earn their first Golden Horseshoe title since 1979.

The second round schedule is expected to be announced this week.
