Library fundraiser will expand ‘library of things’ beyond just books

Friends of the Fort Erie Public Library will be helping the library expand its children’s programming and special events through a silent auction, which is taking place on May 24 and 25 at the Centennial branch located at 136 Gilmore Road.

Tamara Kozel, member of Friends of Fort Erie Public Library, said the group hasn’t hosted a silent auction since the pandemic, instead focusing on book sales, selling donated art pieces, and their annual barbecue.

Kozel said over there are 20 baskets to bid on. She said the baskets include gift certificates to local businesses like spas and hair salons, some golf items and sports memorabilia, wine and food, along with specially made book bags with cute sayings to purchase for only $10.

“We are also selling original artwork, both framed and unframed, and vintage jewellery pins,” she added.

The money raised goes towards expanding children’s programs and special events.

“We are also buying items to expand our ‘library of things’ where we purchase sports or musical equipment to lend out to children similar to books,” said Kozel.

“It will allow families to borrow them to try out different activities without a large financial burden.”

In total, the group is hoping to raise $800.

She said the library will be running events all day on Saturday including the Reptile Kingdom display, crafts, and a spelling bee.

The auction starts at 10 a.m. on May 24 and will run until 2 p.m. on May 25. Cash is preferred but credit and debit will be available if needed. Details are on the library’s website and the deadline to join the spelling bee is the end of this week.

Friends of Fort Erie Public Library has about 30 members and is always looking for more. For information on the silent auction fundraiser or to learn about becoming a member, contact
