‘It gets people through the month’: Mom to Mom Box program in need of donations

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, one local group is hoping Fort Erie residents will consider helping out moms in need.

Faith Gaston knows first-hand the struggles faced by many mothers. She felt the high cost of diapers and clothing raising growing twins.

That is why, with help from her cousin, Megan Kelley, Gaston started the ‘Mom to Mom Box’ outreach program.

“We started because we know the struggle of raising little ones, including the financial burden, and just wanted to give back,” she said.

Originally with a Christmas focus, the project soon expanded to provide mothers with a box of essentials, including things like a few diapers, a bottle, soother, sleeper and blanket to those who need it.

The program, which operates out of Trinity Lutheran Church, is offered on the first consecutive Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. The next scheduled dates are May 7 and 8 at the church.

“It is a program ran by moms for moms,” Gaston said, but noted that the donation-based program is open to all parents and guardians.

Depending on the donations received, they also offer other items like seasonal coats and hats, strollers, diaper bags and much, much more.

“The only things we don’t accept are houseware items, but if you have any new or gently used children’s toys, clothing, shoes, or women’s clothing, then pick up or drop off can be arranged,” noted Gaston.

The group also accepts monetary donations and is able to provide tax receipts. Gaston said monetary donations allow the group to target the specific needs they are facing.

On an average month, the group helps about 100 families.

“It gets people thorough the month,” she said. “We’re here to try and ease that stress.”

Gaston said anyone who wishes to volunteer or donate can learn more on the group’s Facebook page.
