Theft calls in Greater Fort Erie saw a significant increase in 2024 out of a handful of statistics provided by Niagara Regional Police (NRP).
Fort Erie Radio inquired with NRP communications staff about incidents in town and how they compared to the previous year.
Some remained steady or were less in 2024 than in 2023, but theft incidents reported to District 5 police in Fort Erie increased to 166 in 2024, a spike from the 134 investigated in 2023, reads a breakdown provided by NRP spokesperson Constable Phil Gavin.
Motor vehicle collisions were exactly the same with 183 in each year, which includes departmental, fatalities, hit and runs, non-reportable, and property damage only incidents.
But these numbers increase when factoring reports to the collision centre at NRP headquarters in Niagara Falls, putting the number of incidents at 394 in Fort Erie compared to 355 in 2023. There were nine impaired driving incidents in Greater Fort Erie in 2024, three less than in 2023.
Fraudulent activity is an area police have investigated often the last two years in town, but one that saw a decrease by the end of 2024.
There were 190 incidents related to fraud in 2023 and 144 in 2024.
Gavin said further statistics being gathered would be a “laborious” process and require a Freedom of Information request.
