Fort Erie Sting is celebrating a “major accomplishment” with one of its three men’s soccer teams.
That’s according to club president John Sansano, explaining that the same team who won its regional Peninsula Soccer League Premier Division last year, has recently won the regional west division of the Ontario Soccer League (OSL), a provincial-level league for teams in the Greater Toronto Area.
They will set their focus on competing in the Open Cup semifinals on Sunday in Toronto, going into the semi-finals of the season-long tournament ranked in the top four of 69 teams from across the OSL.
They competed in the third-highest of four divisions with a record of 14-2-2, putting 64 goals forward and allowing 23 goals against.
Goalkeeper Tom Crosbie had eight shutouts to win the golden glove honour and Jordan Clements scored 13 goals to take home the golden boot award.
Winning the regional west division now puts the squad in the “highest level of amateurs action” in Ontario.
“This is way bigger than anything we could’ve imagined,” said Sansano, who said the club has grown exponentially in recent years as it currently has three men’s teams, and three “old timer” teams consisting of players 35 years of age and older, along with 850 youth members from the town.
Plans for a women’s team are also in the works to start next year, he said.
“We’re really starting to show up,” he said.
