Fort Erie soccer implementing gender-based house leagues this summer

The Greater Fort Erie Youth Soccer Club (GFEYSC) is trying something new in the upcoming 2025 season.

Starting with the Under 8 age division and up to Under 13, there will separate house leagues for boys and girls.

“The concept is to bring more girls through, give them a better experience,” said GFEYSC president John Sansano in an interview with Fort Erie Radio, adding a key part of the new program is to help build confidence in young women in the sport.

There will also be an adult women’s team, ages 16 and up, for the first time in about 10 years.

Altogether, including adult teams, there are more than 900 players on house league and travel teams combined.

Sansano said enrolment has “been up every year since COVID” and that the “expectation is that it will continue to rise.”

GFEYSC is in need of coaches, especially for Under 6 and Under 8 teams, he said.

A deadline of April 30 has been set to register this year to guarantee a spot on a team when the action starts in late May.

Sansano said there is “lots of space still.”
