Fort Erie ready to sting in Friday home opener under Coach Matt Gill

The Fort Erie Sting, under the guidance of coach and technical director Matt Gill, is poised for an exciting season in the Ontario Soccer League (OSL).

Gill, who took the helm in 2022, has led the team to significant achievements, including a second-place finish in the league in 2022 and winning the Peninsula Soccer League (PSL) in 2023.

The new season kicked off on May 24, and fans can look forward to the first Sting home game on June 7.

Additional home games are scheduled for June 14 and 21, with the team also competing in the Ontario Cup at home on June 23.

“We want to build on our success from last year’s quarter-final run in the competition,” said Gill.

The Sting squad comprises players from across Niagara, Oakville, and Hamilton, including college and university athletes, showcasing a blend of local talent and youthful energy.

Fort Erie Sting will compete in the OSL’s Regional West Division, facing off against teams from North York, Guelph, Burlington, Bradford, Clarkson, and Toronto. The division comprises 11 squads in total.

Gill expressed confidence in the team’s prospects.

“Since taking the team in 2022, we’ve enjoyed a successful run, and we’re eager to continue that momentum this season,” he said.

About half of the squad from last year will be returning.

The Sting is not the only Fort Erie men’s team–there are two other men’s teams in the PSL and three over-35 squads–but it is the only one in the OSL.

The Greater Fort Erie Youth Soccer Club has more than 1,100 players in house league and travel soccer from under-3 and up.
