Fort Erie man sentenced for copper thefts and damaging infrastructure

A 43-year-old man from Fort Erie has been sentenced to 10.5 months in jail, later reduced to 8.5 months with credit for pretrial custody, after pleading guilty to charges including theft and mischief, according to the Niagara Falls Review.

Shawn Hepburn was convicted for cutting down a telephone pole on Canal Bank Street in Welland in November 2024 and stealing 110 metres of communication wire valued at more than $12,000, says the Review.

The theft caused communication disruptions in the area.

Hepburn was initially arrested in May 2024 following a series of break-ins in Fort Erie, where copper piping was stolen from homes under renovation.

Police tied him to the thefts after locating copper inside a cargo van at his residence.
