Driver arrested after man struck by SUV following Dufferin Street altercation

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) detectives are investigating after a man was intentionally struck by an SUV in Fort Erie early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Dufferin Street near Central Avenue shortly after 1:50 a.m. They found a male victim suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital before being transferred to an out-of-region facility for further treatment. His condition is listed as serious but stable, though he has sustained life-altering injuries.

Investigators believe the victim and another male were arguing inside a residence on Dufferin Street before the incident. The argument continued outside, where the suspect allegedly entered a white 2021 Chevrolet Traverse and struck the victim before fleeing the scene.

Police located the suspect at his residence in the area of Bowden Street and Prow Avenue and arrested him just before 6:00 a.m. A search warrant was obtained for the residence and the SUV.

Moses Balabyekkubo, 33, of Fort Erie, has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle – Cause Bodily Harm
  • Fail to Stop After Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm

Balabyekkubo was also charged with six offences under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. He was held in custody for a video bail hearing and remains in custody. His next court date is scheduled for February 15, 2024.

The investigation is ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the NRPS at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1022300.
