Councillors received just over $300K in pay and expenses last year

Reporting on last year’s council remuneration and expenses shows little discrepancy between councillors.

Municipalities are required by provincial law to report on council remuneration each year. Local politicians receive a base salary, and can also receive benefits and claim expenses related to their work.

In Fort Erie, the categories are broken down into: remuneration, benefits, travel allowances, and expenses.

When totalled, all six town councillors were within about $2,000 of each other, with Nick Dubanow and Tom Lewis topping out at $35,645 and $35,346, respectively.

George McDermott and Ann-Marie Noyes received the lowest, at $33,031 and $33,483, respectively.

Mayor Wayne Redekop’s total was $94,382. Mayors receive a higher base pay and often incur higher expenses.

All told, the report came in a shade under $310,000 in total remuneration and expenses last year. In addition to council, the report also included nearly $7,817 paid out to members of the committee of adjustment, as well as an additional $1,300 paid out to Redekop for his position with the Niagara Parks Commission.

Four members of the property standards committee also combined to claim a whopping $12.11.
