A 57-year-old man from Bangladesh who admitted to facing a murder charge in his home country was arrested by U.S. border officers last week after he was denied entry into Canada at the Peace Bridge crossing in Fort Erie.
According to a news release issued Wednesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the man was stopped by CBP officers at the Port of Buffalo on April 19, after being refused entry by Canadian border officials.
During a secondary inspection, he revealed to U.S. authorities that he had been arrested and charged with murder in Bangladesh in 2004–a detail he failed to disclose when applying for a U.S. visa.
CBP determined that the man had committed fraud by omitting the charges from his visa application.
“Our vigilant and skilled CBP officers took the extra steps to identify and apprehend a violent illegal alien,” said Buffalo Port Director Gaetano Cordone in the release. “Their outstanding work ensured this individual was held accountable as he will be deported to his home country.”
Following his arrest, the man was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He is currently being held at a federal detention facility in Batavia, N.Y., awaiting removal proceedings.
Authorities have not released details about why the man was attempting to enter Canada.
