Fort Erie to seek consistent name and signage along Niagara Parkway

Driving along the Niagara River on the Canadian side can be a beautiful, if sometimes confusing trip, but Fort Erie is hoping to make it a little less so at least for the southern end of the drive.
Councillors on Monday supported a motion from Mayor Wayne Redekop that will see the municipality engage with the Niagara Parks Commission and any other agencies with an interest in street names to develop more consistency with the names and signage along the Niagara Parkway.
“At least in Fort Erie we can have it clear,” said Redekop.
The discrepancies came to the mayor’s attention when he was driving home recently and realized the parkway can be known as the Niagara Parkway, the Niagara River Parkway and Niagara Boulevard.
He also said postal service for the area can at times be inconsistent.
“Postal mail frequently requires Niagara Parkway even on the only service road along the parkway with a name, which is Frenchman’s Lane. Sometimes we get our mail at Frenchman’s Lane and sometimes they require Niagara Parkway,” Redekop said.
The road becomes Niagara Boulevard closer to the Peace Bridge.
Redekop’s motion calls for “staff to consult with the Niagara Parks Commission and the public regarding the uniform naming of the road from Bowen Road to Netherby Road alongside the Niagara River as ‘The Niagara Parkway’ and installation of street signs so identifying the road.”
The mayor said he also has a meeting with commission officials this week, where he said he’d raise the discrepancies and discuss adding some consistency.
