Latest test results find algae present at Waverly Beach

One Fort Erie beach has been deemed unsafe for swimming, according to the latest Niagara Region Public Health water quality results.

As of Monday, Waverly Beach was posted unsafe due to the presence of algae.

Bernard Avenue Beach and Crescent Beach were last tested on Tuesday and remain open for swimming. Bay Beach is also safe for swimming, despite testing high for levels of of E. coli as recently as five days ago.

Niagara Region Public Health monitors more than 19 public beaches across the region between Victoria Day and Labour Day. Beaches are posted unsafe when tests show unacceptable levels of E. coli or when other hazards such as algae are present.

Officials caution that results may not reflect same-day conditions, as water testing can take more than a day to complete. Swimming is also discouraged after heavy rainfall, in wavy or cloudy water, or when large numbers of birds are present.

Exposure to unsafe water can cause stomach illness, rashes and infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Daily beach water quality results are available on the Region’s website.
