‘Dangerously hot and humid conditions’ in Fort Erie’s forecast

A heat warning is in effect for the next few days.
Environment Canada says this is the first significant heat event of the season with “dangerously hot and humid conditions,” and that it is expected to last until mid-week.
To combat extreme heat in the past, several cooling stations have been made available to Fort Erie residents: the Fort Erie Leisureplex, which is located at 3 Municipal Centre Drive and open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and all three branches of the Fort Erie Public Library.
As of late Sunday afternoon, the town had not yet posted on social media or released anything to the news media confirming these sites are being promoted as cooling stations this week.
Fort Erie residents should expect daytime highs up to 36 degrees Celsius in the forecast, with humidex values up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Residents can also cool off at splash pads located at Douglas Park, Ferndale Park, Crystal Ridge Park, Stevensville Memorial Park, and Sugarbowl Park.
The extreme heat also brings deteriorating air quality, posing health risks for vulnerable groups such as older adults, infants, young children, pregnant women, and those with physical or mental health conditions or disabilities.
Two possible conditions to look out for include heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Heat stroke symptoms may include confusion, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, muscle swelling, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, extreme thirst, decreased urination, dark yellow urine, seizures, unconsciousness, and coma.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen, avoid prolonged outdoor activities, and seek shade or cool indoor spaces during peak heat hours.
