Town to conduct sanitary sewer smoke testing in June and July

The Town of Fort Erie will be performing sanitary sewer system smoke testing in parts of the municipality from June 23 to July 4 as part of an ongoing investigation into inflow and infiltration.

According to the Town, the testing is designed to help identify stormwater that enters the sanitary sewer system through cross connections, roof drains or old, deficient infrastructure.

By locating these sources, the Town aims to target remediation efforts to reduce the risk of basement flooding, sewage overflows and increased sewage treatment costs.

The smoke testing process involves blowing artificial smoke into the sanitary sewer system while field representatives monitor above ground for locations where smoke escapes, such as catch basins, sanitary sewers or service leads.

The Town states that the smoke is non-toxic, odourless and not harmful to health. It dissipates within minutes.

Testing will take place in several priority areas, including the north end and Gateway neighbourhoods.
