A little time now can make a huge difference later.
With 13 young people in Fort Erie on its waitlist, a number that’s expected to grow when children return for a new school year this fall, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Niagara is appealing to the community for new volunteers.
They made the plea at the April 28 Fort Erie council meeting.
“For as little as one hour a week someone can have a life saving impact,” said the agency’s executive director Erin Graybiel.
Last year, more than 1,000 young people received mentorship support, said Graybiel, who recounted the story of one in particular named Frankie, whose sister died from cancer. The tragedy caused Frankie to withdraw and become very quiet and introverted.
That is until Terry Lee arrived, a BBBS volunteer.
Graybiel said that while the family tragedy still hurts, Frankie’s able to put words to the grief and understand sadness is a normal feeling.
“It’s incredible to see them laughing, playing and smiling together,” said Graybiel, adding Frankie’s confidence has grown by leaps and bounds.
Mayor Wayne Redekop said the program is one that’s close to his heart.
“My father was a big brother…and it was an extremely rewarding experience,” he said.
Of the more than 1,000 youth supported by BBBS of Niagara, Graybiel said 57 are in Fort Erie.
“But we know as we go into the fall there will be lots more looking to connect with a mentor in school,” she said.
BBBS offers one-on-one community-based and in-school mentoring. It also offers group programs.
In addition to seeking more mentors, Graybiel said the agency is running a Golf for Kids’ Sake fundraiser on June 2 at Bridgewater Country Club.
