Fort Erie Meteors hoping for repeat championship

The Fort Erie Meteors are preparing for a potential repeat championship.
On Wednesday night, the local Jr. B squad completed a sweep against the Caledonia Corvairs in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League eastern conference semifinals with a 3-1 road win.
This sends them to what was known last year as the Golden Horseshoe championship, renamed the eastern conference finals for the 2024-25 season. The Meteors won the title against Caledonia last season in seven games, the first time the team won a championship since 1979.
They will play the winner of the other semifinal series between the St. Catharines Falcons and Brantford Titans.
St. Catharines has a 3-0 series lead heading into game four on Thursday night.
In an interview Thursday, general manager and head coach Nik Passero said his team is ready for the next round.
“We’ve been here before and we know the challenges that are ahead,” he said.
But now isn’t the time to sit back and get too comfortable.
“The success we’ve had in the past is great, but we’ve got to keep our foot on the gas and keep moving forward,” he said.
Solid goaltending and “nearly perfect” defence in the series against Caledonia are factors in the recent sweep, but contributions from everyone were also important.
The second, third, and fourth lines “really stepped up” in the last round, Passero said.
The schedule for the eastern conference finals will be known at the conclusion of the series between St. Catharines and Brantford.
