Local bar owner applauds ‘amazing’ free transit rides on New Year’s Eve

Staff at bars across town should be very appreciative of a gesture being made by Niagara Transit on New Year’s Eve to curb impaired driving, according to the proprietor of one local hotspot.
From 6 p.m. on December 31 to 2 a.m. on January 1, the regional transit provider will be offering free rides on all services.
“It’s amazing that this service is being provided,” said Tina Tourountzas, co-owner of Southsides Patio Bar and Grill on Niagara Parkway, adding that this being an option for people who decide to tip a few drinks back also makes things easier on bartenders.
Southsides will have a DJ spinning celebratory tunes as well as specialty margarita pizzas that aren’t on the establishment’s normal menu, she said.
Several other spots are ringing in the New Year in their own way.
At South Coast Cookhouse in Crystal Beach, staff and patrons will watch ball drops from various countries around the world with the first taking place at 6 p.m.
At Utopia Lounge, also in Crystal Beach, The Trip, a well-known Tragically Hip tribute band, will take revelers into 2025 with a live performance.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 on Garrison Road will host a party with no cover charge. Live music will be performed by Second Hand News.
A celebration at Branch 230 in Ridgeway is sold out, according to a Facebook events page.
The Plaice Bar and Grill is hosting a steak and lobster dinner and reservations are encouraged.
