Christmas is just two months away, a signal that food banks are going to need all the donations they can get as soon as possible.
And Community Outreach Program Erie (COPE), which has served the community for 40 years, is thankful for the support it gets each year.
“Every little bit goes a long way,” office assistant Bayan Al-Darawish told Fort Erie Radio on Thursday.
The holiday season brings in all types of food and cash donations, but what is needed now are things such as canned tuna, Kraft Dinner, soups, school snacks, canned vegetables, oatmeal, and pasta sauces.
On October 26, COPE will be hosting a movie event at Fort Erie Public Library’s centennial branch, showing ‘Hocus Pocus’ at 2 p.m.
Viewers are asked to bring at least two cans of food as a donation.
COPE will also be collecting non-perishable items at the Fort Erie Santa Claus Parade in late November.
The average month sees about 500 people use the food bank at COPE, said Al-Darawish.
“We’re seeing new clients every day,” she said.
COPE is located at 32 Dufferin Street and can be contacted by calling (905) 871-2526.
