Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a family-friendly walkathon to support charities addressing homelessness and hunger, is happening on February 24.
The event is being hosted locally by the Brain Injury Association of Fort Erie (BIAFE), which has provided community-based support for adults with acquired brain injuries since 1987.
Although thousands will participate in CNOY across Canada this year, this is the first time the event will happen in Fort Erie. Participants can register online for free, joining the walk to cover 2km-5km either at the main event or offsite with their teams. The walk welcomes all ages, from toddlers with parents to active seniors.

The walk’s route, starting from Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS), spans roughly 2.5km with safety measures in place, such as highlighted safety vests for volunteers. There are alternative ways to participate, including virtual walks or indoor setups for those unable to venture outdoors.
Volunteers, including GFESS students seeking community service hours, will play a crucial role along the route, offering support and distributing hot beverages. Hot soup will be available for all walkers at the finish line, according to the Fort Erie Observer, as well as cookies donated by Rich Products.
