Fort Erie considering all-way stop at Nigh and Burleigh roads

The Town of Fort Erie will study whether drivers on Nigh Road should have to stop at Burleigh Road in Ridgeway, after a delivery van crashed into a vehicle at the intersection Saturday.

Only Burleigh Road traffic stops at the intersection now. Town records show no earlier formal traffic study of the crossing, the Town’s infrastructure services department told Fort Erie Radio in an email.

Residents filed three complaints about the intersection with the Town the next day.

Niagara Regional Police charged a 32-year-old Mississauga delivery driver with careless driving. Police said his van went through the stop sign heading south on Burleigh Road and hit an eastbound vehicle on Nigh Road.

Police said minor injuries were treated at the scene. Investigators found no sign that either vehicle was travelling at high speed.

Police have recorded no other collisions at the intersection this year.

The Town has not determined whether the intersection meets the criteria for an all-way stop. Staff will inspect the site and review its collision records and traffic counts, the department said.

Niagara Regional Police have not recommended any change to traffic controls at the intersection. The Town said police generally give that advice only when asked.
