Power outages hit homes across Fort Erie and Port Colborne

A storm has knocked out power to some homes in Fort Erie and Port Colborne, leaving affected residents without heat or lights as crews work in high winds.

Canadian Niagara Power reported that, as of 9:20 a.m. this morning, 92 homes in 11 areas were affected, including Sherkston, Ridgeway, the Bertie Bay area and Idylewylde Street.

The utility said crews are working in all three communities to restore service.

Some restoration efforts began late Wednesday around 10 p.m. when power returned to 760 homes and businesses in Fort Erie, though additional outages developed overnight.

By midmorning Thursday, crews continued repairs as wind conditions shifted along the Lake Erie shoreline.

Environment Canada issued a gale warning for eastern Lake Erie on Tuesday morning, forecasting winds rising to about 74 km/h and waves climbing toward 6 metres. The agency expects hazards through Friday as the storm system progresses.

Canadian Niagara Power advises residents who lose service to call (844) 501-9473 with their address. The utility cautions that phone lines may be busy during widespread outages.

Residents are urged to stay away from any downed power lines, which should be considered live.

Canadian Niagara Power notes that lines weighed down by wind, ice or snow can fall and create severe risk, and anyone who sees a damaged line or pole should call the utility immediately.

Crews plan to provide further updates as restoration work continues.
