October 22, 2026 at 4:49 AM
As winter creeps up on Fort Erie, the town has decided to start hiring a temporary roads operator to put up snow fence and stock salt boxes, among three job postings that close within 10 days.
The town is also recruiting a part-time school crossing guard and two relief recreation employees, according to the Job Opportunities page on the town’s website, forterie.ca.
The roads operator will start around November and work until about June 2027. The job pays $30.47 an hour plus four per cent vacation pay, based on a 40-hour week, and the worker can join the OMERS municipal pension plan.
The worker will also cut fallen trees away from roads and repair asphalt, according to the posting. The town warns the job brings overtime during winter maintenance, storms, flooding and emergency road closures.
Applicants need a high school diploma and a DZ driver’s licence, which allows the holder to drive heavy trucks with air brakes. The successful candidate must also have one to two years of experience and earn chainsaw certification. Applications close at noon on Friday, October 30.
The two relief recreation employees will flood arena ice and clear snow from facility walkways when the town needs extra staff. The jobs pay $30.47 an hour plus four per cent vacation pay, but the town does not guarantee hours. Shifts can fall on weekends and holidays and come on short notice.
Those applications close first, at noon on Friday, October 23.
The town’s new part-time school crossing guard will escort children at a designated crossing on every school day until June 2027. The posting does not say which school or crossing the guard will staff. The job pays $22.47 an hour for 10 to 11.25 hours a week, worked in split shifts outdoors in all weather.
Candidates must pass a fitness assessment and a police background check. The crossing guard posting is the only one that accepts resumes outside the town’s website, either in person at town hall or by email. Applications close at noon on Tuesday, October 27.
The town says it will contact only the candidates it selects for interviews.
