Fort Erie cop arrested for alleged impaired driving after crash

A Niagara Regional Police officer from Fort Erie faces impaired driving charges after police say he fled officers and crashed into another vehicle in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Thursday night.
Constable Paul-Andre Seguin, 54, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital outside the Niagara region, police said. No one else was injured.
Seguin has served 21 years with Niagara Regional Police and is assigned to uniform patrol. The service suspended him with pay while it investigates.
Police charged Seguin with four criminal offences:
- Impaired operation of a conveyance
- Refuse to comply with demand (alcohol)
- Flight from peace officer
- Dangerous operation
He also faces a charge under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act for driving through a red light.
Niagara Regional Police officers responded to reports of a possible impaired driver around 8:20 p.m. on September 10 and located a suspect grey Dodge Ram pickup truck near Glendale Avenue and Taylor Road.
Police said officers tried to pull the truck over at 8:46 p.m., but the driver did not stop. Officers began chasing the truck because the driver appeared to be impaired.
Three minutes later, officers called off the chase on York Road near Townline Road because the driver was driving recklessly and putting the public at risk.
At 8:51 p.m., officers were called to a crash on York Road near Four Mile Creek Road, where the truck had collided with another vehicle. Seguin was arrested at the scene.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has opened an investigation because of Seguin’s injuries, police said. The civilian agency operates independently of police forces and investigates cases in which someone dies, is seriously injured or alleges sexual assault after contact with police.
Police released Seguin on an undertaking, a signed promise to attend court and obey any conditions police impose. Police did not say what conditions Seguin must follow or when he is due in court.
