Fort Erie shred day will raise money to feed local students

PenFinancial Credit Union will shred documents for free at its Garrison Road branch today, and give the donations to Community Crew, a charity that delivers lunches to 135 students at three Fort Erie schools.

The fundraiser falls on Friday, September 4, of the Labour Day long weekend, days before Fort Erie’s youth return to class. Safe Stor Records Management will destroy the paper on site in the branch parking lot at 1201 Garrison Road between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

PenFinancial invites the public to bring their unwanted, or potentially sensitive, paperwork.

Community Crew feeds 85 students at Peace Bridge Public School, 29 at John Brant Public School in Ridgeway and 21 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Elementary School, according to figures the charity publishes for each school it serves.

Peace Bridge accounts for more Community Crew lunches than any other school outside Niagara Falls.

The charity started in St. Catharines in 2015 and now sends more than 5,000 lunches a week to over 1,775 students at 44 Niagara schools.

Last year’s Shred Day at the Garrison branch raised more than $1,600 for Person Centered Care of Niagara, PenFinancial said in its 2025 community review.

The credit union will also teach a free one-hour class on fraud and identity theft inside the branch at 10:30 a.m. PenFinancial delivers the class through Each One, Teach One, its free financial literacy program, and opens it to members and non-members.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recorded more than $704 million in reported fraud losses across Canada in 2025, the highest annual total in its data. Identity fraud was the most reported type of fraud that year.
