Veterans crosswalk now in place outside Legion Branch 71

A new veterans crosswalk is now in place outside Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 in Fort Erie.

The commemorative crossing was painted Monday at the intersection of Legion Way and Garrison Road, outside the Fort Erie branch.

The Town of Fort Erie was scheduled to paint two Royal Canadian Legion crosswalks Monday, with Ridgeway’s crossing planned for the morning and Fort Erie’s planned for the afternoon, weather permitting.

The town was expected to pay for the roughly $4,000 project, with UrbanMark Asphalt Maintenance, based in Niagara Falls, doing the work.

Murray Morlog, president of Branch 71, previously told Fort Erie Radio the two local Legion branches pitched the idea about three years ago after seeing commemorative crossings installed in other Ontario municipalities.

Branch 230 in Ridgeway is scheduled to dedicate its crosswalk July 17 at 11:30 a.m., with a barbecue and live music to follow at the branch.

Branch 71, which reaches its 100th anniversary this year, is expected to hold its own ceremony in October.
