Sider Road ranked worst in Niagara, fourth in Ontario by CAA

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) released its 2026 Worst Roads in Ontario results Thursday, placing Sider Road at fourth in the province and first in the Niagara region.

Sider Road is a rural Class 6 municipal route running between Bowen and College roads on the edge of Stevensville.

Sider Road topped Niagara’s list in both 2024 and 2025, and ranked eighth worst in Ontario last year. Sider Road dropped four spots provincially in one year, despite the Town of Fort Erie saying it grades the road’s surface a minimum of three times yearly and applies dust control as needed.

Hamilton’s Barton Street East claimed the number one provincial spot for the third time overall, also marking five consecutive years a Hamilton road has topped the list. Mississauga’s Hurontario Street ranked second and Notre Dame Avenue in Greater Sudbury placed third.

The list is built entirely from public nominations submitted online. Thousands of Ontario road users flagged potholes, poor maintenance and uneven surfaces as their top concerns this year, according to CAA.

Brian Pirvu, government relations consultant for CAA South Central Ontario, said in a release that the campaign pressures governments toward infrastructure spending.

“Reliable infrastructure isn’t just about convenience–it’s about safety, affordability and quality of life,” said Pirvu.

CAA survey results indicate that 88 per cent of respondents cite cracks in pavement as a major issue, while 87 per cent identify potholes as a key concern. Uneven surfaces and congestion also rank high among complaints.

CAA runs the campaign annually to direct public complaints toward municipal and provincial decision-makers, and says previous lists have prompted repair projects and budget allocations.

Fort Erie has not announced any reconstruction timeline for Sider Road.
